Who are Baby boomers? They were Born from 1946 to 1964) and started reaching the minimum retirement age of 55 in 2001 (the age when the Federal Government allows you to access your super). By now, a significant percentage of them are 55 and older. Boomers started turning 60 (in 2006). The average retirement age is 60 for men and 58 for women. Where are they: and what are they doing now? Well many of them are joining the ever growing army of retirees travelling around Australia.
Currently there are said to be more than 370,000 recreation vehicles on our roads, and the numbers are growing fast. Each year approximately 18,000 caravans, campervans or motorhomes are purchased in Australia, and about 80 per cent of them will be bought by the over 55s - or grey nomads. In 2007 there were actually 19,500 built, and about 2 million Australians went on mobile holidays. They require a full range of goods, gadgets and luxuries to help them enjoy this new found lifestyle – from the actual caravan/camper/motorhome or whatever, all the way down to the smallest items worth only a few dollars, plus everything in between.
A caravan census as of 31 March 2001 says there were 273,106 caravans registered. Some of those Vans were built as early as pre 1970 (7,987 of them), which mean they are now over 40 years old if they are still around. But with 4.5 million people just starting to hit retirement age, a reasonable percentage of them would be looking to buy into this nomadic lifestyle, and they will need suitable equipment to do it with.
From a 60mins story 10 July 2005: “Where have Mum and Dad gone? If you're in the generation 20-something to 30-something, you might well be worrying about the disappearance of your parents. The good news is they're just fine. Your baby boomer oldies have run away from home to live the carefree gypsy life on the open road.
There are hundreds of thousands of sundowners - retired Australians of no fixed abode, a veritable legion of grey nomads. The bad news is they are out there spending your inheritance to the tune of some $10 billion a year. Some have even traded in the family home to fund their pursuit of sun, fun and adventure across the wide reaches of the Australian continent.”
